Architectural paint analysis is utilized to study the paint layers on a building and when analyized in combination with historic research, there are sometimes surprising results. The September 2023 earthquake that struck near Marrakesh in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco was far enough away from Morocco’s Mediterranean coast that the Tangier Legation––America’s first foreign public property––was unaffected. But the good news ends there. During the summer, a building next to the Legation was demolished, requiring additional structural shoring to ensure our only National Historic Landmark abroad maintains its sound footing. Over 100 friends of Hiawatha joined Ambassador to Türkiye Jeff Flake, renowned Turkish industrialist Rahmi Koç, and Istanbul Consul General Julie Eadeh at a festive gathering in Istanbul on September 27 to celebrate the venerable vessel’s 90th year. The evening reception was held in perfect early Autumn weather at the Rahmi M. Koç Museum on the banks of the Golden Horn. Hiawatha, polished up for the occasion, sat quayside as a dramatic backdrop for the evening’s remarks.
